Val Garland

I first discovered Val Garland, when her collaborations with Lady Gaga started. I thought that her work was so exciting and it really stood out for me as it was edgy and different.
    Val is a British makeup artist, who has worked with everyone from Kate Moss, to Cara Delivingne, to Lady Gaga, and on catwalk shows such as Vivienne Westwood, and Alexander Mcqueen.  She grew up in Bristol, and moved to Australia later in her life. She is now a top MAC artist, and go to designer for the likes of Vivienne Westwood. She has also collaborated on countless publications for renowned magazines such as i-D, Dazed & Confused, and Vogue.
The first thing that caught my eye about Val's work was her use of colour and shape. She isn't afraid to create something a bit risque, or over the top, and I think that it always makes her work interesting, and gives it her own flair. It inspires me to think out of the box a bit more, and not to be afraid of creating something different.

One thing that I really like about Val is that she knows she makes mistakes. In an interview for Vogue she said "What works best for me is spontaneity and a happy accident." It makes me remember that your work doesn't have to be perfect all the time, and I think that is what gives her work such an endearing quality.
Her presence in the fashion industry is ever present, and after doing Lady Gaga's makeup multiple times,most famously for 'Born this way' and 'Judas', her work is constantly being platformed to mainstream consumers as well. I think even though her work is at times quite 'out there' it is also wearable and makes her a very interesting and versatile artist.
