Evaluation of my shoot
For me, working with my photographer and model wasn't a totally new experience as I have teamed up with them before, but never before had I worked with them on a project like this. I really enjoyed this experience, and I think it has bought us closer as a team.
My photographer Axel, is studying commercial fashion photography at Bournemouth university, and having worked with him before I felt confident and comfortable with him and his work.
My model Charlie has a face I felt was perfect for this look, as her brows were a main part of her look, so taking them away was a very strange experience for her.

My model Charlie before the shoot |
For this project I had to keep a budget in mind, as I had to buy a few new products, and as my photographer was based in Bournemouth, and my model was based in Bristol, I had to pay to get myself and my model to Bournemouth, Once I got to Bournemouth I set up and began. Overall it took me 2 and a half hours too do the hair and makeup. One thing that I underestimated was blocking out her brows as they were very thick. This took me longer than I thought it would, which cut into my time for doing other things. After blocking out her brows using spirit gum, I cleaned up around the brow using MME, so the base didn't stick to it. I feel like I could have done this better, as there was still some left just above the brow in my final image. Once I was happy with the brows, I took my greasepaint and painted my cat eye onto her lids. I wanted it too be very dramatic and bold which is why I chose this shape and colour. It also really suited my model and made her eyes pop. Once I was happy with the shape I took my sleek Matte brights eyeshadow palette and stippled the product on until the intensity was bright enough,
After the eyeshadow I took Kryolans white pencil into her waterline, and smudged it down under the eye. Originially I was planning on powdering over it with the same blue eyeshadow, but I think the white widened her eyes, and didn't make it look too fussy. This I why I chose to leave it white. Lastly I coated her lashes with Mac, Haute & Naughty, which really elongated and volumised the lashes.
Then I moved onto her face. I used my maquillage palette, and some moisturiser to thin the product out slightly. I wanted her skin to have a full coverage, but to still have natural elements of her skin showing through. I then took my maquillage palette and used the darker colours as a contour. I wanted the contour to be quite intense, so after powdering her face, I then went back over it lightly with a brown contour powder. Lastly for the lips I wanted a nude lip, as the eyes were so dramatic. Using Kryolans lip palette I used LC003, 004,142 and a small amount of 002 to make a nude colour.
Moving onto the hair I originally planned to do plaits down the middle and slick back the sides, but as my model previously had a small full fringe, when I tried to plait it, it would stay in. This resulted in me moving the plaits to the side of head instead. To slick back her hair I used pomade, and the with her wispy hair I waved them onto the sides of her face.
Once we went onto the set I realised I need this such as hairspray, my brush and my lipstick as the makeup and hair would move and change depending on where we were shooting. When we were shooting outside I had to keep adjusting the hair every few shots as it was windy, and reapplying the lipstick. This has made me realise now more the importance of keeping certain products and tools on you, when you go to set.
Other potential pictures I looked at using |
I actually really enjoyed this shoot, and was pleased with how my photographs came out. Looking at the photographs, I think it would have been interesting to put my model in a white top, so the hair showed up more, and if I had somehow darkened the hair ties in the ends of the hair, so they didn't show up so much on camera would have been better.I think for the makeup if I had just moisturised my models lips a little bit more before we started, it would have looked better as they were quite chapped.
My finished image |
This is my finsihed image, I chose Schon! as I thought the style my idea kind of fitted with its street style. Overall I am happy with how it came out and how the finished cover looks. I think if I were to go back, I might change the hair, definitely make it neater, but it has definitely taught me to be aware of the elements surrounding hair and makeup, how the model affects it etc etc. I have also learnt a lot about speaking up about how I want something to look to a photographer, and giving direction.
I really enjoyed this project, and the skills and confidence I gained with it. It definitely gave me a boost to make me realise that t is possible for me to create something that is publishable!
