Harper's Bazaar 1965

'Space Girl' Harper's Bazaar 1965

This cover from the April 1965 edition of Harper's Bazaar has model Jean Shrimpton, photographed by Richard Avedon. In this issue we see Jean Shrimpton in a pink space helmet.

I chose this cover as one of my influential covers, because it is fun, yet really reflects what was happening in society at the time.

The 60s were a time of daring and outlandish clothing, and the exploration of space. You can definitely see the conjoining of space and fashion in one photograph here, and even in the titles on the front 'Beauty blast-off'.

Picture from inside the magazine. I like the
juxtaposition of the heavy suit with the
feminine nails.
They were also a time of women becoming empowered by themselves. With the creation of the mini-skirt, and protests such as the women's movement, and gay rights, seeing a woman on the cover of Harper's Bazaar doing something that was generally a man's job back then is very controversial.

This became an embalm of the 60s and still is today. With the wide doe eyes , and the futuristic look still a popular choice today.

Kendall Jenner recently did a cover for Dazed & Confused which I think is very reminiscent of the Jean Shrimpton cover.
I think this proves that no matter how old something is, it will always stick around and repeat itself.
